Can Coding Agents Sustain Continual Evolution without Forgetting?

READ THE ORIGINAL SOURCEOpen original sourcehuggingface.co · Opens in a new tab

The paper studies whether coding agent harnesses can keep evolving across multiple software engineering task datasets without catastrophic forgetting. Three SWE task datasets are organized into six evolution directions, and two harness evolution methods are applied continually. Results show that evolving on a later dataset can substantially degrade performance on earlier ones. For example, Meta-Harness reached 94.0% on SWE-Bench with DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731, but fell to 32.0% after further evolution on FeatureBench by the fifth round. The authors report insights to guide future continual harness self-evolution.

How to read this signalSix questions about claims, sources, risks, and open checks

This is a signal-level guide until claim-level evidence is available. “Not recorded” means the evidence has not been assessed here; it does not mean a result is false. How we check AI news →

  1. 01
    Who is making each claim?

The claimant and whether each claim was measured or asserted are not recorded in this public brief.

  2. 02
    What was actually tested?

Not recorded per claim. Check the source for sample size, tasks, model and benchmark versions, and reproducibility.

  3. 03
    Where are the sources?

Original link: huggingface.co. Brief basis: fetched source page. Primary page date and quote locations are not established in this panel.

  4. 04
    What could mislead?

The study covers two harness evolution methods, three datasets, and one model in the cited example; generality beyond these settings is not established. Source claims not independently checked.

  5. 05
What is at risk if wrong?

Not assessed per claim. Consider safety, privacy, cost, and adoption decisions before relying on the result.

  6. 06
    What would change the view?

No claim-specific check is recorded. An inspectable primary method or independent replication could change the assessment.

Key findings from the stored brief

  • Evolution on a subsequent dataset substantially undermines performance on previously seen datasets.
  • Meta-Harness reached 94.0% on SWE-Bench after evolution with DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731.
  • After further FeatureBench evolution, SWE-Bench performance dropped to 32.0% by round five, a 66% relative decrease.
Read with care

The study covers two harness evolution methods, three datasets, and one model in the cited example; generality beyond these settings is not established. Source claims not independently checked.

This is a source-based abstract, not independent validation of the source's claims.
