BEND 2.0 is a benchmark of eight tasks across five experimental datasets that tests whether DNA language models can predict the effects of DNA changes and guide sequence design. The authors report that linear readouts fitted to frozen representations can match or exceed native model outputs, and that functional post-training substantially improves performance. Strong average-effect prediction can conceal weaker context-specific prediction, and accurate prediction of combined mutation effects does not imply accurate prediction of their interactions. Model-guided design can reduce the number of candidates needed, but substantial room for improvement remains, particularly for context-specific and multi-cell objectives.

Automated record
Source observations · 1 recent captures
A changed capture means the extracted text differed. It can reflect page furniture or extraction changes; it does not establish a substantive correction. Source captures remain private.
Retained capture; no earlier comparison available.
New engagement snapshots do not mean the source itself changed. Source observations and AINewsIQ brief revisions are separate records.
Why this may matter
Genomic foundation models are increasingly used to propose DNA sequences and edits, yet current benchmarks may not measure the capabilities design requires. BEND 2.0 offers a more targeted evaluation of mutation-effect prediction and design.
Limits and open questions
